Kenya Area Guide

No other country on earth can offer the visitor as much to see and do. Within the borders of a single country, you will find savannahs rich with big game, timeless cultures unchanged by the modern world, pristine beaches and coral reef, equatorial forests and mighty snow-capped mountains, searing deserts and cool highland retreats and endless opportunities for adventure, discovery, relaxation; more than you would ever expect.

Kenya lies astride the equator on the eastern coast of Africa. It is a medium-sized country by continental standards, covering an area of about 586,600km sq. Inland water bodies cover some 10,700km sq, the bulk of this in Lakes Victoria and Turkana.

Kenya has tremendous topographical diversity, including glaciated mountains with snow-capped peaks, the Rift Valley with its scarps and volcanoes, ancient granitic hills, flat desert landscapes and coral reefs and islets.

The ethnical groups composing the population are seventy, many of which still follow ancient rites and wear ancient costumes, such as the Masai.

The currency is the Kenyan shilling (KES).

The official languages are Swahili (subdivided in four language groups) and English.

From a religious point of view, Kenya’s situation is rather composite: there are around 35% of Anglicans and Protestants, 25% of Catholics, 20% of Animists, 10% of Muslims, and the remaining 10% follows the numerous traditional religions.

They say that Kenya contains within itself the whole of Africa: landscapes, climates and people that make it a unique, fascinating destination.

Local Attractions - Malindi & Kenya

Safaris and Natural Parks

Visitors often think of Kenya as a synonym for Safari. Excursions to the tribal areas of Turkana and Samburu are the most known and appreciated. The Masai Mara National Reserve, west of Nairobi, is one of the most beautiful game reserves in the Country and is protected by UNESCO: the Mara, as it is called, is inhabited by the Masai who hunt and work the land side by side with the many species of wild animals that populate the reserve’s 320 km²: lions, elephants, buffaloes, zebras and hippopotamuses.
Kenya-bound travellers are attracted by its many natural reserves: among them, the Marsabit National Park & Reserve, where wild animals live protected by the forest not far from the beautiful Lake Paradise, a volcanic lake surrounded by an enchanting natural landscape. Other destinations of natural interest are Amboseli Park, the Mijikenda Kaya forest (another UNESCO heritage site) and Baringo Lake.

Experience Malindi

Malindi and Watamu Marine Parks:

These parks were established in 1968 and are the first of their kind in Africa. The ocean blue waters here host a wide variety of corals. Within the coral kingdoms that abound herein, multi-coloured fishes can be seen ducking in and out of this extensive reef. The coral gardens offer spectacular areas for goggling. In these gardens you are bound to see different species of coral fish like the Angelfish, Butterfly fish, Triggerfish and even have an opportunity of watching the Surgeonfish at work. Many glass-bottomed boats to take you for tours in the coral gardens are available. Scuba diving can also be arranged within the hotels.

Casino Malindi:

Casino Malindi is a freestanding ocean front casino, welcoming players and non-players alike. By day, Casinó Malindi maintains a casual atmosphere, with visitors strolling into the coolness of the air-conditioned building to escape the equatorial sun and enjoy a few hours of entertainment.

Nairobi

Nairobi is Kenya’s capital city, the largest in Eastern Africa and the fourth largest in the whole African continent. It is the heart of the country’s politics, economy and culture and acts as hub for several tourist circuits, especially the safari-related ones. In fact, it is also known as Safari Capital of the World or Green City in the Sun. It is a cosmopolite, densely populated city that features the typical contradictions of many large cities in developing countries.

Lamu

Lamu, the most ancient city in Kenya, lies on a beautiful coast of its homonymous island. It is almost wholly inhabited by Muslims and it used to be a commercial sea hub. Lamu overlooks the sea and is a quiet and fascinating place that offers such extraordinary cultural richness to have become a UNESCO world heritage site. The Lamu Museum and the Swahili House Museum preserve historic and artistic testimonies of great interest. The Donkey Sanctuary and a ride on the dhow , the typical boat, are among the attractions that Lamu offers its visitors.

Zanzibar Area Guide

The island of Zanzibar is in the Indian Ocean, 50km off the Eastern coast of Africa, a few degrees South of the Equator. It joined Tanzania in 1964, known as Tanganyika at the time, and since then it has been a part of what is now known as the United Republic of Tanzania. However, it has its own Government, Parliament and President.

The largest town is Zanzibar, which includes the ancient part Stone Town. Among the many islands forming its archipelago, Unguja and Pemba are the most extended and inhabited. The language spoken here is Ki-Swhaili, a result of the contact between the Bantu and the Middle Eastern civilizations, declared UNESCO World Heritage in 1960. English is also spoken, along with French and Italian. The most common religion is Islam and a very small minority of people are either Christians or Indus.

The island of Zanzibar is an extraordinarily beautiful place from the naturalistic point of view and was, for centuries, a crossroads for international trade between Eastern Africa, the Indian Ocean, China and Europe. This has turned the island into a place where different cultures cohabit harmonically.

Star of the East (4)

Local Attractions

Stone Town

With visits to the House of Wonders, the Palace Museum (People's Palace), Dr Livingstone's House and the Arab Fort amongst others, it is a fascinating look at the essence of Zanzibar. You will see Zanzibar's bustling market, winding alleyways, ornately carved and studded doors, two cathedrals and countless mosques. A trip to the site of Sultan Barghash's harem at Marahubi should also be included and rounds off an insight into Zanzibar's huge history and vibrant culture. Stone Town has some excellent gifts shops with plenty of souvenirs and handicrafts to choose from.

Spice Plantations

The history of Zanzibar would be incomplete without the cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon, pepper and many other spices which brought the Sultans of Oman and the beginnings of the infamous slave trade. They can be seen in the plantations just outside Zanzibar town, and a good tour includes opportunities to dazzle the senses with fresh spices. A detailed description is given about a variety of spices, and their uses in cooking and cosmetics. Visitors will be fascinated by the sheer number of spices produced and their incredible value for many ailments. This is also the cheapest place to purchase spices and spice oils.

Jozani Forest

The Jozani Natural Forest Reserve is located in the central east region of Zanzibar island and is home to the rare Red Colobus Monkey (pictured opposite), which is endemic to Zanzibar. These monkeys are full of character, and roam freely. They can also be seen at very close quarters just outside the reserve's perimeter and are incredibly photogenic. Jozani is home to other species including Syke's monkey's, small buck and bushpigs. The elusive Zanzibar leopard (last sited several years ago) is said to feed here at night - perhaps this is why the reserve is only open during the day. Jozani has an excellent nature trail and the guides are well trained and informative.

North Coast

Tours to the unspoilt north coast always end up at Ras Nungwi, a sleepy fishing village on the northern tip of Zanzibar island. It is the dhow building capital of Zanzibar, so you will be able to see the traditional methods of dhow construction in action. This area of Zanzibar has some fantastic beaches and nearby coral reefs which are ideal for diving and snorkelling. The local villagers have built a turtle sanctuary where injured turtles and other marine animals are nursed back to health before being released back into the warm waters of the Indian Ocean.

Kizimkazi Mosque & Dolphin Tour

Situated on the southern point of the island, Kizimkazi fishing village is home to several schools of bottle-nosed dolphins which can often be sighted following a short boat trip from the village. If you are lucky, you may be able to swim quite close to the dolphins which can be a very rewarding experience. Kizimkazi is also the site of a 12th century mosque, the earliest evidence of Islam in East Africa, and is thus worth a visit for both natural and cultural reasons.

Prison Island

Once the site of a gaol for misbehaving slaves, the island lies just off the old stone town. It is fringed with a beautiful coral reef, ideal for snorkelling, and has a lovely white beach for sun-bathing.

It is also home to a family of giant tortoises, imported from the Seychelles in the late 19th century. This island is ideal for a day-trip with refreshments available throughout the day. It also has a small restaurant where you can enjoy freshly caught fish.

Zanzibar Local Attractions
